20 Jan

Wallace Collection

Start: 20/01/2004 18:00 End: 20/01/2004 22:00 BPAS Show: YES Confirmed: YES
Location: The Wallace Collection, London
Description: Sophia in London has been contacted by the wallace collection and asked if we can provide two armoured knights for a corporate do they are holding on the 20th January. We need two people in full 15c Plate for this.

They want 2 fully armoured knights to stand on the gate and be guards

Starting arround 18:00, the 1.5 to 2 hours on the gate, followed by and hour or two walking round and talking/demonstrating to the guests, no combat though..

This is a good chance for us to make a good impression with this prestigious location, and will hopefully lead to more in the future.

Event report from Kev

Everything went OK, I think David Edge was impressed.

Remarkably, we got there at 4:20, 1 hour and 5 mins after setting off from Liam's work.

Even more remarkable, we got a parking place almost immediately (we had to wait until 4:30 to buy 2 hours at the Meter, the max time allowed, then the parking was free after 6:30) during this time I phoned the congestion charge line and paid by card.

I hope it's always that easy

Inside was a bit fiddly - David had to escort us all the time until we were on duty with our polearms (we found out at the last minute we needed those - we used BFW and a loaner from David). The room where we changed was a small armour workshop on the 3rd floor so difficult to get there, but David helped a lot and supplied a trolley (there is a small lift).

Sophia did turn up and she was a great help she stayed right to the end, despite having a bad cold - even worse than mine!

We were "guarding" for about 1hr 45m which was a long time to stand in armour - quite uncomfortable by the end. Then we had a drink and a sit down before going to the galleries to talk to the Guests and wotnot. We finished at about 9:15, I think - so we'd been in our kit for over 3 hours - We are both a little sore today.

We left at about 10:30 and got home about midnight.

David seems like a really good bloke, and hopefully he will be a great ally to the society (he signed my book although he was a bit embarrassed)

So, I hope this will be the start of a long, happy and dare I say fruitful relationship between the society and the Wallace Collection.

Sometimes other groups do displays with just there group, which we can't join in. Camping available from Saturday evening. The site is worth a visit if you've not been before.

The park is on the B4267, between Penarth & Sully. Its marked as an attraction on most road maps. The camp site entrance is just past the main entrance, can be hard to spot, so you can go in the main entrance and ask if necessary.

22-23 May

Wessex Show

Start: 22/05/2004 End: 23/05/2004 BPAS Show: YES Confirmed: YES
Location: Woodlands, showground, Frome. On the B3092 (5 mins north of the A303).
Description: This is what has previously been known as the Wiltshire county show and is basically the same as in the past. Lots of stalls and exhibits to look around. Main arena events including the white helmets motorcycle display team, various aircraft doing displays and stunts, classic vehicles (civilian and military).

We are doing a small LH encampment and stall with our own side arena. Plan for 1 main display in the side arena, and 1 display in the main arena each day. Then practice, drill etc in the side arena whenever anyone wants, no fixed schedule. Will be using handguns, so volunteers to use them needed.

We are running a shoot the knight stall so need volunteers to help run that, hopefully if enough of us do it no one will be stuck on it for too long.

Can't promise much in the way of expenses, we are getting a small fee and what we raise on STK, but will have to wait until the day to see how much is available to be spread around.

Camping available all weekend from Friday. There is beer tent and entertainment (I.e. bands, commedians etc) in the evenings, plus the usual campsite merriment :) This is normally a good fun, relaxed, low key event to start the season. Suitable for all levels of kit as there's no authenticity, or even period, requirements being put on us by the organisers, but obviously hope everyone will do their best as usual. Remember loan kit and costume is available if you let us know you need it.

THE REALLY IMPORTANT BIT

It is absolutely, positively vital that I get Car registrations and names of those travelling in each car in plenty of time as passes must be issued and they are specific to the car and the people in it. Without them you WILL NOT be able to gain access to the site, without a lot of hassle for you, and more importantly me, on the day!!! You may end up having to pay to get in, then we have to claim it back.

Access is possible any time Friday. On Saturday and Sunday no cars will be allowed to drive onto the site after 9:15 (the public are admitted at 10:00) So aim to arrive before that (you also want to avoid the public traffic if possible). If you have to arrive after, you will have to park in the carpark, and carry your kit in, if this happens come and find us and grap some help, we will have a cart available. Gates are open up to 23:00 on Sat & Sun, but only until 21:00 on Friday. I realise this may be a problum for some and am trying to make arrangements, but try and be there before that if coming Friday, if you can't then let me know.

Theres a dedicated parking area for participants which cars have to moved to after unloading,if you've only got a small amount of kit then best bet is to park there straight away and carry it in.

29-31 May

Ankh-Morpork twinning

Start: 29/05/2004 10:00 End: 31/05/2004 18:00 BPAS Show: YES Confirmed: YES
Location: Wincanton.
Description: One for the diskworld fans out there (and anyone else whos interested of course). Dave Barnes is helping run the Ankh-Morpork & Wincanton twinning event that takes place twice a year. Detailes below from Dave about the event, if you are interested in helping out/voluntering for this event please e-mail him directly for details.

Event Details from Dave

One of the first changes I'm introducing is the Day Watch. I have a watch house that I need to man. I need up to 10 willing people to progress through the town, bars and other venues upholding the role of the legal law from 10am Sat/Sun to 6pm.

Next year there will be a proper site with multi-period re-enactments and more traders and the watch will evolve to become the "governing" body. If you would like to volunteer for this more involved (no-kit) role I would be very happy to hear from you!

But you get to be there first! If interested please e-mail me asap for more info on .

I am also interested in more traders (particularly costume makers) for this year and traders, re-enactors for next year.

There is camping available.

05-06 Jun

Leominster Medieval fayre

Start: 05/06/2004 End: 06/06/2004 BPAS Show: NO Confirmed: YES
Location: Lucktonians Rugby Club, Kingsland., Shropshire
Description: Bit of a last minute one this. This is the same event as last year, but the site is different. There is plastic and authentic camping, a battle each day, an archery competition.

The site is at the Lucktonians Rugby Club, Kingsland., Shropshire This is on the A4110, directions from Leominster are to take the A44, west then join the A4110 heading for kingsland and Mortimers Cross, then just follow this into Kingsland, the club is the main road, you can't miss it. It is South of Mortimers Cross.

This clashes with Templcombe, but as its quite a different part of the country we thought people might like to have the choice of attending whichever one they prefer or is more convienient/closer.

If you are interested and plan to attend let us know so I can tell them what numbers to expect.

05-06 Jun

Temple Combe

Start: 05/06/2004 End: 06/06/2004 BPAS Show: NO Confirmed: YES
Location: Temple Combe
Description: Multi soc show that’s been going for many years now but we've normally missed it due to clashes, although a few members have been before.

Don't have exact directions, but have it on good authority that once you get near Templecoombe village, it's very well signposted. in fact,
from a good 10 miles out. It's actually "part" of Abbas coombe.

Its an EMA show so there is a £1 charge per person/per day to cover thier insurance. The society will pay this for those members attending.

Camping is available, but Chris E has the following warning ........

"get there a week early, and book your square foot at least a month in advance....... it's one of those "REAL friendly" campsites..... (i've seen bigger back gardens.......) i've done the show for the last 3 years, and not camped yet..... my advice is, if you want to camp, take the smallest tent you can get away with, and also ear-plugs-- to blank out the snoring (or other sundry noises...) from the tent next door........ having said all that, the gig's definately worth doing. small battlefield, which makes for a very tight battle..... and that's the fun of it..... "

12-13 Jun

Old royal naval college,Greenwich

We need this to be good, so best kit please both civilian and military, need to avoid the usual cheats such as wrapping boots in hessian. Stuff hidden under armour, surcoats etc should be OK as long as what shows is not obvious modern .

If your thinking of coming and not sure if your kits up to it get in touch to discuss It as there is loan kit available.

Access From Friday. Accommodation in rooms with loos, shower kitchen available same as last year, on the floor so will need camping mats etc.

Public access is 11:00 to 16:30 both days, so try to be there before that. Greenwich is outside the congestion charge zone, but if you drive through central London you may be caught by it, it applies until 18:00 on the Friday, after that it doesn’t apply

We need ETA and car details for the gate from everyone!.

Contact there is Kirstan Warren (visitors services co-ordinator) any problems ask for her.

I'll leave directions through London up to you, but depending on what direction you come from either the A2 of J2 of the M25, or follow the South Circular and then cut off down the A21 through Lewisham to Greenwich are possible.

We have to use the the East gate for aaccess same as last year. The Directions to the east gate are below. Theres a link to streetmap.co.uk showing the east gate. Once at the gate (whichever one) the security guards will let you in. Any probs call Craig or Dave W on their mobiles, or ask for the organiser (see above). Parking is meant to be by the East Gate, but you can drop off at the stable blocks.

East Gate: Once in Greenwich, head through the centre, towards the Cutty Sark. You need to go along Romney Road/Trafalger Road (the A206) and turn down Park Row which takes you towards the river on the East side of the site. The gate should be on your left. Theres a link to streetmap.co.uk below with the arrow where the gate is. Go straight to the gates and hopefully the security guards will let you in. Any probs call Craig or Dave W on their mobiles, or ask for the organiser (see above). You can drop kit off at the stable blocks where the accomedation is, but parking is by the east gate rather than at the stable blocks. Theres a code for the lock on the restroom and the gates where we are staying which I will email to those attending.
